Dear Fellow Dancers and Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
After the last two years, we long for good news, for God to bring us new and good things.
In CDFC-Calgary’s first in person workshop in 2022, we will be invited to notice the new life growing outside and the ways the Holy Spirit gives us all new resurrected life every day. Guided movement experiences and reflective art and movement using jigsaw puzzle shapes in many colours will be provided as ways to reflect on our lives, listen to and learn from God and anticipate His continuing goodness to us in new ways yet to come!
In the days before this workshop pay attention to the new life around you outside and make note of signs of spring or newness that you are drawn to or that give you joy. You may want to take a picture to remind yourself of it. You will use these signs of spring as inspiration for part of your creative movement.

  • Psalms on the Move - Zoom, everywhere
    Saturday, February 26th, 2022
Lisa Calverley will instruct the first Christian Dance Fellowship of Calgary workshop for 2022. We will start with introductions, then go into a directed improvisational warm-up. Once we meet back you can present your co-creation (optional but encouraged).
Focus will be: how your personal journey with the Lord connects to your Psalm and how we can integrate our personal journey into our interpretation, focus on process rather than product, listening and being receptive to God and each other through the creative process, how we can reproduce our ideas through imagery and movement.
Materials needed: A chair or stool for some spine exercises, a room with a little space to move in, worship music (optional: to play in your background while doing the warm-up), a notebook for taking notes on the teaching (optional), your bible to look up the Psalm (or it may be helpful to copy it out or photocopy if you want to circle, highlight, or underline words).

  • Fear Not: A Creative Movement Workshop - Calgary, AB
    Saturday, February 29th, 2020
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10
Our first response when faced with something new and possibly threatening can be fear. When scripture urges us not to fear or be anxious, it almost always lists God’s care, help, presence, strength, love, provision or trustworthiness as reasons not to fear and it invites us to replace fear with trust in God’s character. This two hour Saturday workshop will be an opportunity to creatively discover ways to strengthen our choices to focus on God’s presence and care when scary things happen.
The movement experiences will include a calming movement exercise that brings peace to your body, opportunities to express our response to Jesus’ loving qualities towards us and creative movement exploration of how trust and fear can alter the way we move, feel, and perceive our circumstances.
Laurel Bridges has been facilitating Christian dance/movement and creative arts workshops for 30 years to bring healing, a deeper connection with God and to explore creative ways to pray. She has a Master’s degree in dance movement therapy.

Beginning with a guided warmup, we will move into a time of free and structured improvisation using images and scriptures journeying from the crucifixion to the resurrection. We will then further explore these concepts in smaller groups through compositional exercises. Abby and Jessalyn will then teach a small movement phrase (with modifications) from one of ESIRA's Easter repertoire pieces "Forever" by Kari Jobe. We will conclude with a time of free worship dance, praising God for the cross, for Jesus' atoning sacrifice, for the free gift of eternal life through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ESIRA is now a contemporary worship dance company rooted in worship and the Word. • Take Nothing for Granted - “In Everything Give Thanks....” Thess 5:18 - Calgary, AB
    Saturday, September 29th, 2018
With open hearts and minds let’s embrace this new season with gratitude. How fortunate we are to have a body that potentially can move in a myriad of ways and in those ways be capable of respectfully and creatively giving thanks to our Creator God.
Have you ever been to a class in which no matter how hard you try to follow the moves of the instructor, it just isn’t happening? Your body isn’t responding fast enough, isn’t strong enough, nor supple enough, it hurts, or for whatever other reasons, you have difficulty keeping up with him /her.
In this workshop Iona Boughton will teach and facilitate the creation of simple movement phrases from which participants will be able to express themselves and relay gratitude from hearing contemporary songs that inspire, empower and uplift. There will be no right or wrong way to move. Movements will be those that are comfortable for you and within your capabilities as you’ll be able to do your own movements in your own way and/ or suggested ways, alone, with a partner, and/or in a group.
Join in for an enjoyable, engaging morning of exploring and playing with dance elements; trying them out on your body; responding and expressing as you listen and move to prayerful words, and the melodic and rhythmical components of such songs as:
"Trust in You" - Lauren Daigle
"Yes We Can"- Me in Motion
"Everything Comes Alive" - We Are Messengers
    "Say Something"- Jon Bauer
    "Up Again" - Dan Bremnes
"No Matter What" - Ryan Stevenson

Harmonics is a movement system “discovered through the inspiration and teaching of the Holy Spirit”, by Paula Douthett, a pioneer of Christian dance, “which enables a person to become sensitive to the physical laws which God created…out of His love, wisdom and goodness.” (Douthett, 1993, Harmonics, p. 1) These physical laws include gravity, centrifugal force, inertia, momentum and pendulum effect. “In Harmonics we learn to work with the natural physical forces … and in becoming sensitive to them, we experience a beautiful harmony which affects our souls and spirits as well.” (Douthett, p. 7) Paula Douthett came to Calgary to teach Harmonics several times from 1995 to her last visit in May 2015. • Discovering Joy Through Movement, Music and Visual Image - Calgary, AB
    Saturday, January 28th, 2017
A Creative Workshop Facilitated by Laurel Bridges
    You make known to me the path of life;
    In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16: 11
As 2017 begins you are invited to discover, re-discover and uncover the joy that is within you, the joy that can grow as you connect with God and other people. After 2-3 challenging years in Alberta it might seem an odd time to focus on joy as a movement workshop theme. In this last year, I have learned more about joy’s positive effect on brain development and spiritual growth. Joy is not superficial happiness but is a deeper response to being with God and others that can allow us to ‘rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep’ (J. Wilder, Joy Changes Everything). In John 15 quoted below, Jesus invites us into the circle of His love with the Father, to receive His joy.
This workshop will include several movement experiences that will allow you to explore how music, pictures and positive memories can change your mood and movement expression. We will also have an opportunity to remember and express together the joy that dance in response to God’s love and in community brings to us. Come and spend a morning discovering joy! “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love… I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15: 9-11Please bring a photo of a place or people that bring you joy.
Laurel Bridges has been facilitating Christian dance/movement and creative arts workshops for over 25 years to bring healing, a deeper connection with God and to explore creative ways to pray. She has a Master’s degree in dance movement therapy.

You are also invited to stay at the church after the workshop for our Friendship lunch at the church. Let us know if you want to stay.

We will explore this theme in individual and pairs movement experiences, dramatic movement, worship and prayer dances and opportunities for creative prayer. There will be playful experiences of carrying boxes, burdens and cares, peaceful calming led movement, and prayerful experiences of allowing Christ’s love to pour into our hearts.

Saturday and Sunday, May 26th and 27th, 2012 - Calgary, AB and around the world
CDFCalgary, together with the ICDF, will be participating in a Gateway Prayer Watch along with ICDF dancers around the world for a very special time of prayer on this Pentecost/Shavuot weekend. Why the name "Gateway Prayer Watch"? Because ICDF have divided the world into the 12 segments, each one lining up with one of the 12 gates in the city of Jerusalem. Canada is aligned with the Jaffa Gate and our prayers will be for Israel, Canada, USA and France. It proves to be an exciting time of global unity as we join the ICDF for this time of worship and prayer.

During this time of intercession, you will learn some very simple liturgical patterns as we pray and read scripture together. ICDF dancers all over the world will be praying at the exact same time as the prayer team in Jerusalem (8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m., Jerusalem time). The hour will consist of four quarters and the themes are: Worship and Repentance, Reconciliation and Resurrection, Unity and Outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and Preparing the Way for Jesus' Return. If you’d like to see what is planned, please see the following attachments which we received from Mary Jones, the founder of ICDF.
